Work Experience

Co-founder and co-owner of Shear Heaven, a personal full-service hair salon.-My experience as a business owner has helped me develop good interpersonal and business skills, essential for long term success in business. The past thirty years have presented me with the opportunity to interact with people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life. I certainly got to understand what people care about and how they view the city they live in.

Co-founder and partner in Ruberto Holdings, a property development company 2008 to present: My role is to identify and help develop properties. This experience has taught me to look for win/win situations through negotiations, communications and problem solving skills.

Recreationist at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre worked at this facility during the summer and throughout my final year of university. I was given a better understanding of the challenges of the staff in a correctional facility, as well as a better understanding of the lives of the inmates.

Past work experience include:  Deckhand on the Lawerence-cliff Hall.  Electrician Helper. Construction Worker, Theatre Usher.

Shell Canada Athletic Award-Lakehead University, 1978

Honorary Chair of the Thunder Bay Marathon Committee-The committee decided that Thunder Bay should have its own marathon and through volunteering helped ensure that would happen. This event helped boost the economy and promote the city. My duties were to help in any way possible especially from the city’s point of view. This was a 3 year run.

Newspaper columnist-Thunder Bay Chronicle Journal- I wrote a column called Carpe Diem for the local paper for four years. It was an excellent experience which taught me how the press influences public opinion. The experience also helped me improve my writing and editing skills.

I was a Co-coordinator at Lakehead University in the Department of Lifelong Learning in the Faculty of Education. This was a contract position that was created to market and promote the Lifelong Learning programs for the Faculty of Education at Lakehead University.

Teacher of Physical Education on the Canadian Forces Base in Lahr, Germany-Having supply taught during the school year of 1992, I accepted an intermediate teaching position as physical education teacher.  I also coached and refereed basketball, soccer and track. I volunteered on many occasions to take students on learning trips to other European cities. My experiences in Europe gave me a greater appreciation for the sacrifices the military makes on behalf of all Canadians.

Co-founder of Global Experience retail gift store-This family business focuses on environmental and cultural products from around the world. Through the business I have had the opportunity to travel to Asia on several occasions where I developed relationships with suppliers and helped with the buying process. This experience certainly gave me a very good appreciation of other cultures and confirmed my love for living in Canada.

President of the East Loon Campers Association-My duties included planning, delivering and evaluating programs in the summer at East Loon Lake. I made recommendations to members that dealt with issues that arose from campers on the lake. My goal was to ensure that everybody had a safe and enjoyable summer.

Port Arthur Rotary Service Club member-I was Chair of the International Committee for two years and participated in many activities; hosting exchange students, raising money for charities, promoting activities like Lobsterfest and Rotary Ribs etc.

Co-founder and Chair (2003-2006) of the Sleeping Giant Writers Festival-My initial goal in establishing the festival was to help further develop the writing community of Thunder Bay. My duties include marketing, sponsorship and master of ceremonies. This annual festival is now a literary destination for well-known Canadian Writers. I also helped establish a partnership with Fort William Historical Park to ensure the longevity of the Festival.

Delegate for the Desjardins Credit Union of Thunder Bay-As a delegate I listened to the members concerns and suggestions. I would bring any pressing issues to the annual general meeting in Toronto.

Member of the Italian Cultural Centre-My role is to be supportive. I also attend meetings and events and help promote the Italian culture in our community.

I have coached or refereed various sports all my life. As a business person, I have also supported charities through sponsorship or by donating my time. I have also helped various organizations fund-raise. The community has been good to my family and I believe in giving back any way possible. That is one of the reasons I went into politics.
